We meet at 8:30 a.m. in the town of Gardiner, Montana on the first morning. The trip begins and ends here.
Day One
Well gather in Gardiner, organize and distribute gear, load our packs and drive one hour to our trailhead. We begin by hiking down a steep hill to a suspension bridge, which is one of the highlights of the trip. We hike 2.2 miles into the Black Canyon, cross Hellroaring Creek and relax at our first campsite, where we have adequate time for additional exploration and getting to know our hiking companions. We learn how to hang our food from a so-called bear pole, a safety structure that the Park Service places at all their backcountry campsites.
Day Two
After a leisurely start, we hike further into the Black Canyon, gradually climbing over a ridge, dropping first into Little Cottonwood Creek and then into Cottonwood Creek. We watch for bald eagles that may be sailing along the river in search for a tasty meal. Just before Cottonwood Creek, we pass from Montana into Wyoming. We camp at a remote location on the edge of the Yellowstone River. (3.8 miles).
Day Three
Again, we are off to a leisurely start. The trail stays close to the mighty Yellowstone River. We admire the majestic scenery and stop at pleasant resting places which your guide will use to fill us in on details about the wildlife in this area. We are, after all, hiking in wolf and bear country, and there are many stories to tell. We end todays hike at another pristine campsite. (3.0 miles)
Day Four
Today, we continue following the Yellowstone downstream, sampling the fishing, enjoying the breathtaking landscape, and viewing river cascades. We pass Crevice Lake just after the Blacktail Junction and cross Crevice Creek on a footbridge. Shortly after Crevice Creek, we pay a visit to majestic Knowles Falls. Now it is not far to our last campsite at a very nice location with great views and a small beach. (4.2 miles)
Day Five
Today, we hike our longest stretch of 5.3 miles. Just before reaching Gardiner, we can see the confluence of the Gardner River and the Yellowstone. We conclude our Black Canyon hiking adventure in Gardiner and say good-bye to our new friends.
Total hiking distance is 18.5 miles.
The hike begins at 6500 feet and ends at 5250 feet, though the trail does rise and fall somewhat.
This itinerary is a general outline and is subject to change at the discretion of the guide.
