We meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center in Mammoth on the first morning.

Day One
We organize and distribute gear, load our packs and drive out to the trailhead. We begin by hiking down into the scenic canyon with dramatic panoramic views. We cross a suspension bridge over the Yellowstone River and then hike up Hellroaring Creek. We relax at our campsite at the base of Hellroaring Mountain, where we will stay for two nights. We'll have adequate time for additional exploration and getting to know our hiking companions. There's the possibility of hiking a short distance to a wildlife observation point. It certainly is worth the extra effort!

Day Two
Today, we wake early, leave our packs behind and explore the surrounding area with just light backpack. We look for animal sign, maybe find a carcass or skull, hike up on a ridge to search for wolves, bears and other dramatic wildlife, using spotting scopes and binoculars. We'll have a picnic, learn about backcountry etiquette, and how to react to a possible bear encounter. We explore the area some more getting a feel for wildlife habitat, and enjoying this special place and its wild inhabitants.

Day Three
Today, we break camp after a leisurely breakfast. We hike into the Black Canyon of the Yellowstone, gradually climbing over a ridge. We watch for river otter and bald eagles. We hike to high points with dramatic vistas, in search for wildlife such as elk, moose, bighorn sheep, bears, and especially wolves. This evening, we camp at a remote location on the edge of the Yellowstone River.

Day Four
This hiking day will include dramatic vistas, great opportunity of watching wildlife and animal tracks, as well as good exercise when climbing out of the canyon. The trail stays close to the mighty Yellowstone River. We stop at pleasant resting spots, which our guide will use to fill us in on details about the wildlife. We look for tracks and sign of predation. After we hike out of the canyon, we will cross Blacktail Deer Plateau, a very good area to watch for a variety of animals, such as coyote, wolf, elk, and others.

Total hiking distance is approximately 15 miles.

This itinerary is a general outline and is subject to change at the discretion of the guide.
