Bio

Gary grew up on a farm in Nebraska where he spent his spare time hunting, fishing, and canoeing the local rivers with his brothers. He joined his adventurous siblings for his first backpacking trip to Glacier National Park as a teenager and knew the Rocky Mountains would be his future home.

Gary has a BS degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Nebraska and a MS degree in Land Reclamation from Montana State University. He worked throughout the Western States fighting fires and conducting range surveys for the BLM, worked for the Forest Service in Idaho and Montana doing recreation and forest management, and spent 15 seasons as a backcountry ranger in Glacier National Park. Gary spent the past 20 years helping build public trails around Bozeman, Montana for a local non-profit. His hobbies include boating, nordic skiing, biking, hunting, fishing, and savoring the beauty of mountain vistas. Gary, who joined the YSC team in 2016, loves to travel, meet new people, and to share in Yellowstone adventures!
