Hunter Berard

Naturalist Guide

Hunter has always felt drawn to the great outdoors. That’s why coming to Montana was a no-brainer for him. Throughout college, he developed a passion for outdoor adventuring within the forests, mountains, and rivers in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Notably, during his time at Montana State University, he discovered a new species of microorganism living within Yellowstone’s hot spring systems. On his days off, you will find him pursuing the rugged peaks of the Beartooth Mountains, the cold waters of the Gallatin River, and the deep powder at Bridger Bowl.

Bio

Hunter grew up in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. It was in the tide pools that his interest in ecology first developed. Looking for a new adventure, he left the salt and came to Montana for college. There, his interests were piqued by an introductory microbiology class, so he chose his degree. Yellowstone National Park is a hotspot for some of the most extreme and unique microbiology in the world, and through this lens, he learned much about the
microecology of the park.

In Early 2024, he joined a research laboratory focused on environmental microbiology. It was there that he discovered a new species of methanogen and began a year-and-a-half-long process to cultivate and understand that organism, working alongside nature-published scientists. But this work quickly burned him out, and by the time he graduated from college, he had determined that it was not for him

A year of adventuring and skiing in Montana led him to desire a place where he could develop his skills and work towards becoming an outdoor professional. Throughout his time with Yellowstone Safari Company, he hopes to continue developing and sharing his passion for the ecosystems and environments in and around Yellowstone.
