Yellowstone at Christmas: A Holiday-Week Itinerary for Wolves, Wildlife, and Snowy Solitude

by Monica RobinsonOct 27, 2026

Picture Christmas morning at the Roosevelt Arch: a few bison frosted white along the road, steam drifting off the Gardner River, and almost no one else around. While most visitors know Yellowstone as a summer park, the holidays reveal a quieter, wilder version of it. On many winter days in the northern range, our guides pass only a handful of other vehicles.

Yes, you can visit Yellowstone at Christmas. Over the holidays, the only road open to cars runs from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, through Mammoth Hot Springs and the Lamar Valley to Cooke City. The park’s interior, including Old Faithful, opens to guided snowcoach and snowmobile travel on December 15. And winter is prime wolf-watching season in the Lamar Valley.

What’s Open in Yellowstone Over the Holidays (2026)

Roads and access

  • Open to cars all winter: the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs, the Blacktail Plateau, and the Lamar Valley to Cooke City. Storms can close it temporarily, so check conditions each morning.
  • Closed to cars: the rest of the park’s roads, which close to regular vehicles at the start of November.
  • Oversnow season: guided snowcoaches and snowmobiles begin running on interior roads on December 15, 2026.

Lodging and visitor centers inside the park

  • Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel runs its winter season from December 15, 2026, to March 8, 2027, and it’s the only in-park hotel you can drive to. Its dining room serves all three meals, and winter dinners require a reservation.
  • Old Faithful Snow Lodge opens December 16, 2026, but it’s reachable only by snowcoach or snowmobile. It is open on Christmas Day.
  • Visitor centers in Mammoth are closed on Christmas Day.

Holiday traditions worth planning around

  • Christmas Eve candlelight services at the historic Mammoth Chapel, built in 1912–13 for the Army soldiers stationed at Fort Yellowstone.
  • The tree lighting on Officers Row at Mammoth on Saturday, December 12, a tradition that goes back more than a century.
  • Gardiner’s Christmas Stroll, Thursday, December 3, an evening of local businesses, lights, and community cheer.
  • New Year’s at Old Faithful, where Snow Lodge guests walk out after midnight to watch the geyser’s first eruption of the year.

Why Christmas Week Is Wolf Season in the Lamar Valley

As snow deepens at high elevations, bison, elk, and bighorn sheep move down onto the lower slopes and valley floors of the northern range. Wolves follow their prey, and against a backdrop of white they’re far easier to spot than in summer.

Our naturalists track pack movements throughout the year and compare notes daily on where wolves, foxes, coyotes, and eagles have been active. With spotting scopes, you can watch a pack travel, rest, or hunt from a respectful distance without disturbing them.

Wildlife is wild, and no one can promise a wolf sighting. But a multi-day safari gives you several dawns in the field, which is when activity tends to peak.

A Holiday-Week Itinerary Built on Three Safaris

This plan works for most holiday windows between December 20 and January 2. Adjust the order around your flights and the holiday dates that matter most to your group.

Days 1–2: Arrive, then orient on the Winter Wildlife Safari

Fly into Bozeman (BZN) and settle in. On Day 2, join the Yellowstone Winter Wildlife Safari, a full day in the northern range with 6 to 7 hours inside the park.

Guests often tell us they wish they’d taken their tour at the start of their trip. A day with a naturalist teaches you where to look, how wildlife behaves in winter, and how to read tracks in the snow, so every day afterward gets richer.

Day 3: A slower holiday day

Keep this day open. Enjoy Bozeman’s downtown, drive Paradise Valley in daylight, or head to Mammoth for Christmas Eve traditions. With sunset arriving before 5 p.m. near the solstice, a rest day keeps the trip from feeling rushed.

Days 4–6: The 2-Day or 3-Day Winter Wolves and Wildlife Safari

This is the heart of the trip. Your guide picks you up at your lodging, and we arrange your overnight stays near the park so you can be in the Lamar Valley at sunrise. Expect early game drives, a visit to Mammoth’s travertine terraces, and optional 1 to 2 hour snowshoe outings into quiet winter habitat.

Gardiner vs. Bozeman: Where to Stay for a Yellowstone Christmas

Choose Bozeman if you want the airport close by, the widest choice of restaurants and hotels, and a festive downtown for your non-safari days. It’s roughly a 90-minute drive to the North Entrance, but your guide handles the winter driving.

Choose Gardiner if you want to wake up at the park’s doorstep. Bison and elk often wander through town in winter, and you’re the shortest drive from Lamar Valley at dawn. Gardiner is quiet in winter, though, and many businesses close or shorten hours, so book dinners ahead.

Want to stay inside the park? Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel opens December 15 and offers a winter airport shuttle from Bozeman for its lodging guests.

On the 2-Day and 3-Day safaris, we arrange your overnight lodging near the park, so you only need to book your nights before and after.

How Far Ahead to Book a Yellowstone Christmas Trip

Holiday week is one of the busiest stretches of the winter season, and multi-day safari reservations depend on hotel availability at the time of booking. Book in this order:

  1. Lock in flights to Bozeman first. Holiday seats into BZN are limited.
  2. Reserve your multi-day safari immediately after. We recommend booking by early to mid November for Christmas week.
  3. Book lodging for nights outside the safari in Bozeman, Gardiner, or Mammoth.
  4. Schedule the Winter Wildlife Safari early in your trip to get the most from the rest of your stay.
  5. Make dinner reservations, especially for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
  6. If you’re driving yourself, rent an AWD or 4WD vehicle with winter tires and check road conditions daily.
  7. Pack real winter layers: a waterproof shell, warm mid-layers, insulated boots, mittens, and a hat. Cold drains camera batteries fast, so bring spares.

Plan Your Yellowstone Christmas

A Yellowstone Christmas trades crowds for quiet, and summer heat for frost-covered bison and wolves moving across a white valley. With a naturalist guide handling the winter roads, the gear, and the hot drinks, all you have to do is watch.

FAQs

Is Yellowstone open on Christmas Day?

Yes. Yellowstone stays open through the holidays. The road from the North Entrance at Gardiner through Mammoth Hot Springs and the Lamar Valley to Cooke City is open to cars all winter, weather permitting. Interior roads open only to guided snowcoaches and snowmobiles starting December 15. Guided safari availability on December 24 and 25 varies, so contact Yellowstone Safari Company to confirm your holiday dates.

Can you see wolves in Yellowstone at Christmas?

Yes. Winter is one of the best seasons for wolf watching in Yellowstone. Elk and bison move down into the Lamar Valley and other lower parts of the northern range, and wolves follow them. Their dark coats stand out against the snow. Sightings are never guaranteed, but a guide with spotting scopes and current knowledge of pack movements greatly improves your chances, especially on a multi-day safari.

Should I stay in Gardiner or Bozeman for a Yellowstone Christmas trip?

Bozeman for airport access, more restaurants and hotels, and a festive downtown. It’s about 90 minutes from the North Entrance. Stay in Gardiner to be at the park’s doorstep and closest to the Lamar Valley at dawn, but book dinners ahead since many businesses close or reduce hours in winter. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel inside the park opens December 15.

Can I see Old Faithful at Christmas?

Yes, but not by car. Old Faithful is in Yellowstone’s interior, which is open only to guided snowcoaches and snowmobiles from December 15. Old Faithful Snow Lodge opens December 16 for overnight stays. Yellowstone Safari Company’s winter safaris focus on the northern range, including the Lamar Valley and Mammoth Hot Springs, which you can reach by vehicle all winter.

How far in advance should I book a Yellowstone Christmas trip?

Book as early as possible. Holiday week is one of the busiest periods of the winter season, and multi-day safari reservations depend on hotel availability. Reserve flights to Bozeman first, then your multi-day safari, ideally by early to mid November. Then book lodging for your remaining nights and make dinner reservations for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
