  • Solitude among Yellowstone’s Geothermal Features
  • Evening Wildlife Sightings
  • Perfect Dark Skies for Stargazing

This tour begins with a scenic drive into National Park in the wonderful quiet hours of late afternoon when everyone else is exiting. We will venture towards some of the Park’s most famous thermal basins or hot springs, and geologic features and we will showcase some of the best volcanic hydrothermals on the planet, likely enjoying it all to ourselves. As daylight fades, prepare to witness the park’s breathtaking transformation under the stars. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is one of the best places in the United States to experience true dark skies, and this experience includes a stargazing experience led by a professional astronomer.

Your exact route and itinerary will be determined by your interests, current weather, night sky and road conditions. Our guides are all highly experienced, with thousands of hours in the field, and will expertly tailor your safari to you and your group.

Private Specialty Tour with a Professional Astronomer

This experience offers guests a chance to explore Yellowstone’s legendary volcanic features including erupting geysers, bubbling hot springs, and steaming fumaroles. We will plan to enjoy a walk or several short walks at some of our favorite thermal locations where we view these fascinating features up close and personal as the light fades.

We may also encounter Yellowstone’s diverse wildlife along our drive into the interior. Herds of bison roaming the plains, elk herds grazing in soft grassy meadows, eagles and osprey hunting the rivers for fish, bears carousing hillsides, and nocturnal animals like coyotes and owls build a symphony of sounds and a feast for our senses. Our professional guides will utilize high powered optics for viewing wildlife at a distance. Their guidance will help you enjoy incredible visuals as well as provide photo and video opportunities.
We will then move into our nighttime program.

Nighttime in Yellowstone’s Geyer Basins

In our summertime evenings we will enjoy cooler air and quietude as the astronomer sets up a high-powered computerized telescope to view the night sky. Using this telescope you will see distant galaxies, nebulae, planets, double stars, and other cosmic wonders. The astronomer will also enrich your experience with constellation stories and myths, placing us within history as we gaze into the heavens as so many people before us have as well.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is a remote paradise, far from city lights and other sources of light pollution. Because of this, the stars shine extra bright and we are able to see the heavens more clearly. Summertime in Yellowstone is the perfect opportunity to view the Milky Way, as the combination of pristine skies and orientation toward the star-rich galactic core make for an unforgettable experience. The clouds and star clusters of our galaxy come alive, as you see sparkling stars splashed across the night sky in dramatic clarity.

This tour begins in West Yellowstone or Bozeman with easy access to the National Park in the wonderful quiet hours of late afternoon when everyone else is exiting. We will venture towards some of the Park’s most famous thermal basins, hot springs, or geologic features. We may walk at Norris Geyser basin to see its milky blue acidic pools and steaming 1000 acre basin, as well as the largest geyser on the planet. We may walk at Midway Geyser basin to view the largest Hot Spring in the Park, Grand Prismatic, and its sister Excelsior. We may walk at Fountain Paint Pots to see some of the best mudpots in the Park and geysers that erupt all the time against the backdrop of a massive volcanic plateau. Or, we may spend time at Mammoth Hot Springs if we enter through the North Gate.  Regardless of our choice and options, we will showcase some of the best volcanic hydrothermals on the planet, and will likely have it all to ourselves.

In the park, we will find a good location for stargazing and make a temporary camp. We provide chairs, blankets, binoculars, spotting scopes, red-light flashlights, green laser-pointers, and a high-powered computerized telescope for deep space viewing on these tours. Guests will truly have a holistic view of their place in the cosmos by the end of this experience.

As daylight fades, we will find a good location and make a temporary camp as we prepare to witness the night sky’s breathtaking transformation. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is one of the best places in the United States to experience true dark skies, and this experience includes a stargazing experience led by a professional astronomer. With expert guidance, you’ll be introduced to the wonders of the night sky, from constellations steeped in history to the celestial objects that light up the heavens and your imagination. The astronomer will share fascinating stories, folklore, and the science behind the stars, offering an enriching perspective on the cosmos.

Depending on the season, you will have the opportunity to view different objects in the night sky. Spring is best for distant galaxies, like Bode’s Galaxy, hidden deep within the Big Dipper. Summer brings the bright Milky Way, as well as other clusters of stars such as the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules. As we approach autumn, the nights get longer and the grand Andromeda Galaxy can be found using the telescope.

FAQs

How long will the wildlife safari and stargazing tour take?

This tour will begin at 4pm from West Yellowstone or Bozeman and return at approximately 12am. We may reach out the day before your scheduled trip to discuss weather and your interests to plan the day to optimize everything you are hoping to see and do. We may start later or shorten the tour to return earlier. Many options are possible.

is this tour good for families?

This tour is great for families who are interested in seeing wildlife, seeing some of Yellowstone’s volcanic features, and viewing the stars. For smaller children we offer big screens on the spotting scopes and telescopes to help them see, and will engage them with stories and tactile entertainment such as furs and bones and coloring books if needed to help them enjoy their time. Families with young kids are encouraged to contact our office and Lead Astronomer in order to ask about their specific children and their needs to make sure it will be a good fit for everyone. We take out families on all of our tour options!

Will we see wildlife on this tour?

We will likely see wildlife from the time we enter the Park and throughout our driving time for a few hours before we set up for our stargazing. Our guides are trained in wildlife viewing behavior, safe driving practices, and how to safely set up spotting scopes to view wildlife at a distance. We may see bison, elk, eagles, ospreys, deer, coyotes, even bears or wolves. We carry bearspray in case a wildlife approaches us, but mostly for a safety backup. We use optics to view wildlife from inside and outside the vehicle safely and effectively.

How strenuous are the walks at the geyser basins or hot springs?

Most of Yellowstone’s geyser basins lie in actual flat basins, so they are very easy to traverse for anyone who can walk for 20-30 minutes at a time on wooden boardwalks or paved pathways. There are some small inclines, and if guests are concerned about mobility we can provide walking poles and assistance if needed. Most of the walks at the north entrance are easy, and we can adjust as necessary.  These walks are all ADA accessible as well.

How long will we spend stargazing on this tour?

We will plan on stargazing for around 2 hours, as summer days are quite long and late, while also offering you the opportunity to view as many of the highlighted cosmic phenomena as possible.

Will we see the Milky Way?

Yes! Summer is the best time to see the Milky Way, as Earth is facing its galactic core (the center of the galaxy, which has the highest concentration of stars and clouds). With skies as dark and remote as we have in this region, we will be able to see the Milky Way with just our unaided eyes; a view that many of our guests have never seen before!

What will we see through the telescope?

Visibility of objects in the night sky varies with the seasons as Earth orbits the sun and faces different parts of the universe. Spring is good for deep space objects, specifically galaxies like Bode’s Galaxy and the Whirlpool Galaxy. Summer brings the brightest portion of the Milky Way, as well as other star clusters like the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules. Autumn’s longer nights make it perfect for seeing the Andromeda Galaxy and even the ringed planet Saturn later in the season.

How cold will it be at nighttime?

Yellowstone’s plateau is at 7-8000ft , and at these high altitudes it can become chilly in the evenings. In the height of summer it will typically not get cooler than 50 degrees, but lower temperatures are not unheard of. We recommend wearing layers throughout the day so that you are comfortable in afternoon warm temperatures and sunset time and evening as the temperatures drop. We recommend if you are prone to feeling cold to bring hats and gloves as well. We will always have hand warmers in case the temperatures are cold.

What happens in the case of inclement weather?

Our astronomers will be following the forecast and will contact guests the day before this tour every time to discuss potentials and possibilities. If the weather looks like it will be too inclement to view the sky, we will first work to move your tour to another day. If this is not possible we will be happy to cancel and refund you.
