2-Day Winter Wolf and Wildlife Safari

P1150045 0Winter is the best time to watch wolves as well as the diverse wildlife that braves the cold seasons on Yellowstone's Northern Range. This 2-day expedition includes a night at charming cabins.

Winter is a time of big animals (bison, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, wolf, mule deer, and coyote) on big landscapes. Migratory birds have departed, leaving only those who are winter durable. Bears and ground squirrels are denned for the season. The Northern Range of the Yellowstone Ecosystem harbors the greatest diversity and concentration of large, romantic, and highly visible wildlife anywhere during a North American winter. We see hundreds to thousands of bison and elk, packs of coyotes and wolves, herds of bighorn, mule deer and pronghorn. Eagle, raven, and magpie occur throughout the range.

On this 2-day winter excursion we will take advantage of the snowy background when watching wolves and other wildlife.  Elk, the most common prey of wolves, are concentrated at lower elevations in large herds. Wolves are more easily seen as they track, hunt, or feed on an open landscape in the vicinity of these herds. We have the opportunity to observe not only the animals themselves but also their behavior and relationships. These are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that few people ever imagine! For those interested in more physical activity, we often combine wildlife watching with snowshoeing. This allows us to truly explore the world of winter wilderness.

The WINTER WOLF & WILDLIFE SAFARI is a two-day tour allowing us a very early morning start on day two, evening wildlife watching immediately prior, and a flexible schedule with enough time for possible backcountry activities. We will also be able to take in other Yellowstone features such as Mammoth Terraces.

Available from December through mid-April, these special safaris originate from the general Bozeman area, entering Yellowstone National Park through the north, or Gardiner, entrance. We provide a picnic lunch on both days, just like on our Full Day Safaris, and breakfast items on day two. Overnight accommodations at Pine Edge Cabins included.

Did You Know?

The Swahili word "safari" simply means "journey" and so we consider our tours to be journeys to a deeper understanding of wild animals and their habitats, geology and their ancient forces, history and its meaning for today. Journeys, too, to find peace and joy in the natural world. And last, but not least, journeys that lead to our own wild soul.
