Overview

Yellowstone is a place of extremes. Weather and instincts dictate wildlife movements. Spring is filled with the beauty of new life, summer is warm and vibrant with animals thriving on plentiful foods, fall is the time where all life prepares for winter and the landscape is colored with beautiful hues of gold and bronze, and winter is a blanket of white where every life form stands out. Our wildlife safari from Big Sky will provide you access to Yellowstone National Park, allowing us to take advantage of one of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in North America.

Highlights

  • Wildlife Experience in Yellowstone from Big Sky
  • Endangered Species On Display: Mammals and Birds
  • Geothermal Landscapes & Iconic Wildlife

Whether it is in the wintertime to the Northern Range or summer to the Eastern Range, we provide an engaging wildlife experience for our guests. With the use of our high-quality binoculars and spotting scopes you might be fortunate enough to view all the hallmarks of Rocky Mountain West, surrounded by the immense and beautiful landscape all around you.

Your exact route and itinerary will be determined by your interests, current wildlife sightings, and current weather and road conditions. Our guides are all highly experienced, with thousands of hours in the field, and will expertly tailor your safari to you and your group.

Yellowstone is an incredible landscape all year round. America’s first National Park is a region where wildlife, birds and plants have persisted and survived since pre-settlement days aided by extensive efforts from conservation and indigenous groups to preserve its integrity and visibility. We are privileged to enter this world of megafauna, fossils of worlds past, an ever-changing system of predators and prey, snowfields and flowers, and Rocky Mountain life flourishing in all its forms.

Our Big Sky Wildlife Safari includes a visit to the best areas in the lower 48 states to view wildlife. Seasonally we can see grizzly and black bears, raptors such as bald and golden eagles, many species of hawks and falcons, waterfowl including the endangered trumpeter swans, canines such as wolves, coyotes and foxes, and our famous hoofed animals such as elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pronghorn antelope, and of course our famous bison herds.

Our naturalist guides are highly experienced and enthusiastic and will tailor each trip for guests’ needs and desires. Whether you are hoping for a glimpse of a wolf, a walk to a frozen waterfall, or time wandering the otherworldly thermal cascades at Mammoth Hot Springs, we are happy to guide you on your journey, all the while providing invaluable interpretation and storytelling. Throughout the day we will provide optics for viewing wildlife, snacks, hot beverages, a gourmet picnic lunch and every amenity you may need to stay warm and comfortable during your day of adventure.

Winter

Winter in Yellowstone showcases a wild, exclusive place. From November to April only 50 miles of the Park are open to regular vehicles from Yellowstone’s Northern Gate near Gardiner, Montana. The winter season is arguably the best time for watching the most remarkable of apex predators, the gray wolf. Our naturalists follow wolf pack movements throughout the year and know the best places for an opportunity to observe them in the wild. Oftentimes wolves stay far from people, meaning the use of our optics is tantamount to an incredible “close-up” experience. Viewing a pack of wolves hunt, play, feed and fight can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that few people ever imagine or forget! The gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park also contribute to the greater story of conservation in the West, and have become a trademark for the National Parks and public lands in this region.

Summer

Summertime in Yellowstone National Park reveals a chaotic, wild land of bison fighting, rivers rushing, flowers blooming and birdlife frolicking. In the heat of the sun our guides will know where to look for animals from the great grizzly by Yellowstone Lake, to the bison rutting in the hundreds in Hayden Valley to the coyotes and eagles hunting rodents among sage fields while muskrats and mallards eat water grasses and insect larvae from our great rivers. We will witness all kinds of wildlife movements as they search for food and prepare for mating seasons and face the least hospitable season for their survival in a world built for winter. Our guides know when and how to look for the animals and birds we know are there to show our guests what magic this landscape has to offer in this harsh season.

This was a terrific tour of Yellowstone. My wife and I went with a guide on a basic introduction tour to Yellowstone National Park. The guide knew an enormous amount about Yellowstone, the animal life, and, of course, the natural highlights. He was very engaging and a delight to spend the day with. We would not have had as good an experience if we tried to do the tour ourselves. Highly recommend Yellowstone Safari Co.

FAQs

How long does it take to get to the north gate entrance of Yellowstone National Park from Big Sky?

Big Sky is on the western side of Yellowstone and it does take about 2.5 hours to get to the North Gate from this location. The entire drive is within the Greater Yellowstone Ecoysystem and we have the opportunity of seeing wildlife and birds the entire way, as well as time to enjoy river canyons, forests and beautiful open valleys.

Our winter tour provides a transport so that guests staying in Big Sky can access the northern range (Lamar Valley) on this tour. You will have two guides for this tour; one will pick up guests in Big Sky and transport them to Bozeman, and the other will take guests into Yellowstone National Park from there. The transfer guide will be ready to transport them back to Big Sky at the end of the day. Our guests will benefit from door to door service on this tour to orient them to the region and provide the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Can we cut this tour shorter than the 10-12 hours if needed?

In the winter months, this tour includes a drive from Big Sky to the Northern Gate of Yellowstone National Park which is about 2.5 hours. That time going back and forth is about 5 hours. If guests would like to have a shorter day we focus our tour near the Northern Gate of Yellowstone, rather than venturing further into Lamar Valley.  If we did this, we would explore areas such as Mammoth Hot Springs and the Old Yellowstone Trail where many wildlife are typically be present, such as elk, pronghorn, deer, sheep and more. This will cut several hours out of our day if needed. Please note that this means we will not be able to visit Lamar Valley if you decide to have a shorter day.

Is the Big Sky Wildlife Safari tour family friendly?

Yes we are happy to offer this private safari to families with children of all ages. It is important to note that we do not provide car seats or boosters, (per insurance requirements), so guests with very young children will be responsible to provide their own if these items are needed. It is also important to note that winter in our region is marked by snowy conditions and cold temperatures. If parents feel that children may not be able to be comfortable in extreme temperatures or conditions, we are happy to discuss options.

In each vehicle we provide engaging hands-on naturalist kits so children can feel furs and bones of the animals they are looking at out their window. We can provide coloring books and crayons and a National Park animal bingo card. Our guides will help engage children throughout the day with all five senses when they are on the landscape and inspire awe when and however possible. Yellowstone does a lot of this work for us!

What happens if there is inclement weather forecasted for this tour?

We offer all of our tours in all weather conditions. For winter tours, we monitor all of the roads on our route all winter long. We will communicate conditions to our guests and guides to make sure everyone is prepared to go out on the day of their tour or move their date to another day if possible. We will only cancel a tour if we feel it is unsafe to travel or roads in our scheduled route close, which sometimes does happen. Guests will receive a full refund if we choose to cancel the tour.

Guests can be assured that we have 4wd vehicles with snow tires and are all very capable winter drivers. Our office is always available to discuss concerns and offer advice and guidance for the best clothes and comfort items to bring.
