The Lewis & Clark Expedition was the greatest land exploration ever sponsored by the United States government. Join us as we follow their path through parts of the beautiful state of Montana.
In addition to being the first Americans to cross the continent in search of a water route to the Pacific Ocean, Lewis & Clark kept extensive records of their travels. In their journals, the captains made many of the first scientific descriptions of American flora and fauna, as well as detailed accounts of Indian nations, their languages and customs. With the help of the journals, almost 200 years later, we know what they saw, experienced, thought, and accomplished.
In the spring of 1805, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the Corps of Discovery first entered what is now the state of Montana, after a long and arduous winter with the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians in what is now North Dakota. They covered more miles in Montana than in any other state and had some of their most dramatic experiences here.
